
The 2024 Street Chip Seal Project will begin August 12th and continue until August 19th, if weather cooperates. The below map includes details. Please move your vehicles, campers, etc. if they are in the affected areas.


Starting Thursday, August 8th and continuing approximately a week and a half, the City of Groton will be cleaning and videoing sewer lines in the west part of Groton. This includes all properties west of Hwy 37. The map indicates what lines will be done. If your house is not vented properly there could be some sewer backup. Please put your toilet seat down. If you smell sewer gas, be sure to run water down your traps.

Ordinance 6-4-2 Fireworks. It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, keep for sale,
or offer for sale to any person in the City of Groton any firecrackers, Roman
Candles, rockets, or other fireworks or explosives from which firecrackers,
blank cartridges, or other fireworks may be made or manufactured.
Fireworks shall be defined as those fireworks classified by the US
Department of Transportation as Class C (Common) Fireworks (C.F.R. Title
49 - Transportation, Part 173.100 (r)) effective on January 1, 1983,
including but not limited to those fireworks designed primarily to produce
visible effects by combustion, that must comply with the construction,
chemical composition, and label regulations promulgated by the US
Consumer Products Safety Commission (C.F.R. Title 16 -Commercial
Practices, Part 1507), effective on January 1, 1983.
No person shall discharge or shoot any fireworks or firecrackers of any kind,
within the City of Groton. Public display of fireworks is permitted at any time
with the written consent of the City Council.


City Hall, Wage Memorial Library, and the City Shop will be closed Wednesday, June 19 for Juneteenth.


Prayers to the Harder family as they mourn the passing of their beloved family member. Merle Harder passed away June 4, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Merle served as a volunteer firefighter for 17 years and held various positions in the fire department. He was elected to serve on the Groton City Council for 11 years and retired from the Groton Area School District after 26 years.

The city received the donation of 2 benches for our park in loving memory of Doug Ehrenberg, Sr. Doug passed away November 25, 2023. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served as an elder for many years and was also a member of the Groton American Legion Post #39. We are so grateful to Doug's family for their donation!

Two Elm trees provided by Poet-Groton were planted at the Groton Baseball Complex for Earth Day. Kelly Schneider, Mary Carrico and Jess Freeland helped get tree # 1 in the ground. Many thanks to Weber Landscaping crew for “actually” digging the holes and planting and to Poet-Groton for donating the trees!

4-1-11 Yard Waste Removal. The person, firm, corporation or business
responsible for disposal of yard waste shall not place or leave on any public
street, road, alley or sidewalk or other public ground in the City of Groton,
any yard waste which may obstruct the free use of said street, road, alley,
or sidewalk of public ground or which could obstruct storm water, gutters, or
inlands. For a first violation of this ordinance, a fine of $25 shall be
imposed; for a second violation a fine of $50 shall be imposed; for a third
violation a fine of $100 shall be imposed; for a fourth violation of this
ordinance a fine of up to $500 shall be imposed. The City Finance Office shall
notify the violator of any such violation and the amount of fine to be
imposed for that violation as described above, and if the violator remits
payment for that fine directly to the City Finance Office, no further action will
follow on that violation. If the violator refuses to remit payment for that
amount demanded within 30 days from the date of the written notice, the
case can then be prosecuted as a criminal offense.

Members of the area will meet Thursday, April 18th at 7pm at City Hall for the last of 3 scheduled core team sessions to discuss economic development in the Groton SD Community. From this core team, 6 members will be chosen to serve on the Groton Development Corporation. Individuals are encouraged to attend the meeting or reach out to City Hall at 605-397-8422 if they would like to join this process.
